Diet: We all know the benefits of eating well, but can the same be said about the adverse effects of poor dietary choices on our skin? Our skin is a living organism that requires proper hydration (so don’t skimp on drinking your water) as well as eating a well-balanced diet to ward off common skin conditions. Too much grease, sugar or fast food will show up on your skin. Here are some basic guidelines to help you eat right for your skins best health:

  • Pick fruits and veggies as they’re rich in vitamin C for optimal skin health
  • Eat your fatty acids found in fish (salmon, tuna) for omega-3 to prevent dry skin and omega-6 for healthy skin growth
  • Take your Vitamin D (fortified dairy product or supplement) to maintain good skin
  • Snack on nuts for skin loving minerals zinc and selenium that support healthy skin and protect it from sun damage
  • When in doubt, take a multivitamin to ensure you get all your vitamins and minerals

Poor Hygiene: Skin is porous, and if your pores aren’t cleaned adequately of grime or makeup they’ll clog, leading to blemishes and breakouts. So wash your face twice daily and be sure to thoroughly remove your makeup before bed, for luminous skin.

Bad Habits: Things like tanning, unprotected sun exposure and smoking can all contribute to problematic skin. Tanning damages the skin by destroying your skin’s natural collagen supply – can you say hello premature ageing. So, save your skin from harmful UV rays by avoiding unnecessary tanning and remembering the SPF. Frequent smoking dries out the skin and clogs the pores, leading to the early onset of ageing. For best results quit smoking, if not you’ll need a deep cleanser and an anti-ageing moisturizer to protect and nourish your skin.

De-Stress: Life is busy, there’s never enough time in the day, and your to-do list is never-ending. Stress leads to lack of sleep and the excretion of stress hormones – fight or flight response – which flicks the immune system into overdrive and can cause inflammation and stress-related skin issues like acne, hives or psoriasis. So, schedule some daily self-care time: exercise, get enough sleep and remember to take deep breaths.

Be Selective With Cosmetics: Not all cosmetics are created equal, so with that in mind if you have sensitive or problematic skin only purchase products approved by dermatologists for acne-prone or sensitive skin. These products won’t contain known acne-causing ingredients like lanolin and petrolatum.
